Overview

Cheltenham is an attractive Regency spa town described as “the heart of the Cotswolds”. It is noted for its numerous festivals of literature, science, music and jazz, food, cricket and the famous National Hunt horse racing festival.

The Hospital

Cheltenham General Hospital is a 555 bedded DGH situated in the centre of the town. The hospital has 14 operating theatres undertaking the following specialities:

  • General surgery (including regional multidisciplinary pelvic resection surgery)
  • Robotic urological and gynaecological surgery
  • Vascular surgery (regional service)
  • Orthopaedics
  • Day case surgery
  • Gynae oncology surgery (regional service)
  • Urology (regional service, including robotic surgery)
  • Radiotherapy & specialist vascular access (for regional oncology service)
  • Chronic pain service
  • Acute pain service
  • Ophthalmological surgery (including vitreoretinal, oculoplastic & paediatric strabismus surgery)


Anaesthetic training includes additional attachments at Gloucester for ENT, maxillofacial surgery and obstetrics.


There is a 12-bedded department of Critical Care allowing for basic and intermediate and faculty of intensive care medicine training.


The department provides training at differing levels of seniority with ACCS (CT1-2), Anaesthesia CT1, CT2b and ST5-7 trainees and ICM trainees together with core medical and foundation trainees.


Basic competencies are attained over a 12-16 week period with a gradual exposure to out of hours on call. There is an established 'novice anaesthetist' training programme over a 3 month period including SIM man training sessions. New Anaesthetists are given the opportunity to pair up with a senior trainee 'buddy' whilst in the department.


Trainees attend ENT head and neck clinics to practice upper airway fibre optic endoscopy. Senior trainees are encouraged to undertake management training with opportunities to participate in service improvement projects. Simulation training is actively developing within the county with access to SIM man and baby units.


There is an active programme of tutorials, journal club and M&M meetings. Attendance at appropriate regional teaching days is encouraged.


The department comprises 26 consultants, 18 SAS doctors and 3 departmental administrators.
