Frenchay hospital is part of North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) and receives all the emergency admissions from North Bristol. It has teaching hospital status and is affiliated to the University of Bristol. It is a tertiary referral centre for adult and paediatric Neurosurgery, Plastics and Burns, Trauma and complex pelvic / spinal orthopaedics. In addition, it has a well developed Chronic Pain Service (offering advanced training) an 18 bed general and neuro intensive care unit (accredited for intermediate and advanced training) and high dependency care facilities. All emergency General, Vascular and Orthopaedics for NBT is undertaken at Frenchay and there are elective cases in General and Maxillofacial surgery. We also operate on about 3,500 paediatric cases each year and have a paediatric Post Anaesthetic Care Unit and HDU.
Specialist trainees currently spend a total of 9 months at Frenchay during years ST3/4. In this time they rotate through 3 specialist modules:
- Neuroanaesthesia, including anaesthesia for angiography, CT and MRI
- Plastic surgery and Burns, including 10 sessions of Chronic Pain.
- Intensive Care (neuro and general)
Trainees also return to Frenchay in the advanced training years of ST5/6/7 to complete compulsory units of training and pursue specialist interests.
The department of Anaesthesia currently has 42 consultants, 1 Associate Specialist and usually 19 trainees plus Clinical Fellows in Neuroanaesthesia. The theatre complex comprises 8 main theatres, 2 plastics plus 1 specialist burns theatre, 4 day case theatres and the radiology suite.
