The Great Western Hospital opened on 3rd December 2002. The Trust catchment population is currently approximately 340,000 people.
The Anaesthetic Department works with general & urological surgery, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, ENT, oral surgery, paediarics, obstetrics and gynaecology and also the ICU and the ED. There are comprehensive diagnostics including MRI/CT and an IT system has been installed which provides an advanced Patient Administration System, electronic patient records and GP links. There are also electronic requesting of radiology and pathology tests and electronic prescribing.
There are 26 Anaesthetic Consultants and 12 non-training grade anaesthetists based in 18 theatres. There are 15 operating theatres in one complex on Level 1 and also a spearate dental suite. The Obstetric Unit is on Level 2 which has 2 operating theatres and 12 delivery rooms and the associated White Horse Birthing Centre. High risk and elective LSCS clinics are held weekly. The Pain clinic offers an outpatient service and a pain management programme runs in conjunction with colleagues from clinical psychology, occupational and physiotherapy. There is an Acute Pain Team with the usual roles including an involvement in the enhanced recovery pathways for hip & knee arthroplasty, gynaecological and colorectal surgery. Ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia is a well-developed service. There is a consultant-led pre-assessment/perioperative medicine service run daily and a CPET facility.
