Anaesthesia for Major General Surgery
Residents undertaking this SIA at the RUH will have exposure to a wide range of major general surgical subspecialties including Colorectal, Upper GI, Gynae-Oncological, Urology and occasional Carcinoid surgery.
A wide range of upper GI and colorectal surgery is undertaken at the RUH including major general cases such as laparoscopic hemi-colectomies and high anterior resections.
Residents will gain experience in anaesthetising patients for robotically assisted urological procedures such as laparoscopic radical prostatectomies and radical nephrectomies.
Major gynae-oncological surgery is undertaken at the RUH and there will be opportunities to anaesthetise patients for HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) and to attend the specialist gynae-oncological preoperative assessment clinic.
Residents undertaking the SIA will also have the chance to attend the Colorectal and Gynae-Oncological MDT meetings to learn about shared decision making and to follow patients through to their surgery.
Involvement in local QI projects as well as national projects such as PQIP will be encouraged and supported.
