Special Interest Area/Fellowship in Vascular Anaesthesia, North Bristol NHS Trust
This is a 3- to 6-month module aimed at senior anaesthetic residents in stage 3 training or post-CCT. It is expected that around 6 months may be needed to acquire all the Learning Outcomes and Key Capabilities in the Special Interest Vascular Anaesthesia module.
The SIA Vascular Anaesthetist will be allocated approximately two days per week (FTE) to vascular anaesthesia lists, the majority directly supervised training lists with progression to indirectly supervised lists. There are two vascular theatres at NBT running 5 days per week, one of which is a hybrid theatre for joint procedures with Interventional Radiology. The range of cases includes open AAA, carotid endarterectomies, complex endovascular repairs of TAA and AAA, plus peripheral revascularisation, management of thoracic outlet syndrome and venous cases. The Vascular Anaesthetists work closely with the Vascular MDT, including a friendly and collaborative group of Vascular Surgeons.

- Vascular specific pre-op assessment clinic (POAC)
- CPET clinic
- Complex Care Clinics with Complex Care Assessment team – COTE physicians with an interest in perioperative care
North Bristol Trust also has a thriving Regional Anaesthesia service and anaesthetists completing the Vascular SIA will experience a range of techniques including thoracic epidurals for open aortic surgery, US guided cervical plexus blocks for carotid endarterectomy and lower limb blocks for amputations. There is also the opportunity to anaesthetise for renal vascular access procedures, the vast majority of which are performed under RA.
We encourage SIA Vascular Anaesthetists to get involved in Audit, Quality Improvement and Research. Professors Ronelle Mouton and Rob Hinchcliffe lead a collaborative vascular anaesthesia and surgery research group that meets monthly to discuss ongoing research projects. There are opportunities for QIPs, guideline development and updates and presentation at M&M and Clinical Governance. There is also a range of teaching opportunities including a Vascular Final FRCA Study day, the regular 11@11 anaesthesia resident meeting and full departmental morning teaching, for which vascular topics are always welcome.
