St Michael’s Hospital SIA in Obstetric anaesthesia (6 months)

 Structure of Module

Daytime duties on delivery suite 07:45 - 17:45 alongside two consultants and two more junior resident who usually split to manage up to five elective sections and the delivery suite workload.

Attendance in clinics, labour ward forums and MDTs audit meetings can be arranged in EDT time or on your rostered advanced obstetric days.

Typical Day

CDS – receive handover from the night shift anaesthetist at 07:45 then join the MDT board round at 08:00 followed by the ward round. Tasks for the day will include reviewing mothers on HDU care, providing analgesia for labour and anaesthesia for surgical procedures. We would expect an SIA anaesthetist to step into the role of the 3037 coordinator and ensure additional tasks such as the inpatient and outpatient follow ups are completed, coordinate and gynae emergencies and ensure the smooth running of general theatres at St Mikes in addition to CDS.

Elective – arrive by 8am to pre-op assess the first two elective cases for a team brief at 8:15 in theatre 2. There are up to five elective Caesarean’s and the theatre is staffed until 6pm.

On call will be split between obs cover and 2nd on. You may find you have one or two more obs shifts than other second on's.
