Trauma and Stabilisation SIA at NBT
NBT is a major trauma centre in the south-west, offering excellent opportunities for advanced training in trauma anaesthesia.
Candidate
• Stage 3 resident anaesthetist
Duration
• 3 months minimum
Duration dependent on seniority and existing level of experience in trauma anaesthesia, pre-agreed learning objectives for the placement, other SIAs that trainee wishes to undertake.
Training
Knowledge, skills and expertise in trauma anaesthesia will be gained through:
- Paired lists with dedicated trauma anaesthesia Consultants. Relevant lists include trauma, major orthopaedics including pelvic reconstruction & orthoPlastics, neuro emergencies, interventional radiology and general emergency/vascular lists.
- Supervised and independent practice as anaesthetist in Major Trauma Team.
- Shadowing Trauma Team Leader with increasing responsibility for leading the management of the major trauma patient.
- Supervision from block consultant to independently perform regional analgesia for rib fractures
Clinical Governance
• Supervised audit and research available on variety of trauma and affiliated topics.
• Contact with Lead for the NMTR (National Major Trauma Registry) at Southmead.
Attending Meetings/Courses
Attendance at local, national and international level is encouraged.
• National meetings include:
- London Trauma Conference in December
- Trauma Care Conference in March
- MIMMS or HMIMMS course
• Expected provider (preferably instructor) for European Trauma Course or ATLS
• Expected attendance and participation in local meetings include:
- Monthly MT case reviews
- Monthly fracture neck of femur M&M
- Monthly major haemorrhage meeting
Organising/Teaching on Courses
Advanced trainees are expected to contribute to the organisation and delivery of trauma education on a departmental and regional level.
• Opportunities include (not exhaustive list):
- NBTs Trauma Team Training courses
- NBTs Emergency Anaesthesia Course.
- NBT Final FRCA and Post Fellowship study days.
- NBT departmental meetings.
Service Delivery
• Advanced trainees will contribute to the 3rd on call trainee rota including attendance at Trauma calls, and deliver regional analgesia for rib fractures.
• Once appropriate knowledge and skills acquired, advanced trainees will independently manage the trauma list.
Quality Improvement
• Any NBT Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in trauma can be approached for suitable projects.
• Examples of projects to date include:
- Thoracic injury patient pathway
- Difficult vascular access project
- Trauma team training and debriefing project
- Fracture neck of femur care pathway
- Major haemorrhage pathway
- Direct to Theatre Access
- Rib fracture analgesia
Other Opportunities
- Secondment to GWAAC (Dr Andy Lockyer) and RETRIEVE (Dr Scott Grier)
- Support for higher professional qualifications in Trauma management will be given as required e.g. Trauma MSc at Queen Mary University London.
Potential Secondment to Other Centres
• Observer at the Royal London Trauma Centre.
• In addition completion of related components anaesthetic curriculum e.g. Orthopaedics,
Burns/Plastics, are encouraged.
