Specialist Interest Area in Neuroanaesthesia
Southmead Hospital offers Stage 3 residents the opportunity to undertake a Specialist Interest Area (SIA) in Neuroanaesthesia within one of the UK’s leading neuroscience centres. Trainees will gain exposure to a wide range of complex neurosurgical and neuroradiological cases, working closely with an experienced multidisciplinary team in a high-volume tertiary referral unit.
As of June 2025, the following dedicated subspecialty lists are available:
- Intra-cranial tumour – including awake craniotomy and advanced neuro-monitoring
- Skull-base surgery – multidisciplinary otolaryngology and neurosurgical approaches
- Endocrine neurosurgery – pituitary and related lesions
- Neurovascular surgery – aneurysm clipping, AVM resection, and vascular bypass procedures
- Neuromodulation – deep brain stimulation and intrathecal pump implantation
- Epilepsy surgery – resection, disconnection, and invasive monitoring procedures
- CSF/Hydrocephalus surgery – shunt procedures and endoscopic third ventriculostomy
- Spinal surgery – complex instrumented fusions and intradural procedures
- Neuroradiology – anaesthesia for diagnostic and interventional procedures
- Stroke thrombectomy – one of the busiest centres in Europe, providing 24/7 service for mechanical thrombectomy
- Specialist neuro pre-op assessment clinic
- Major trauma centre with significant neurotrauma workload
The SIA is designed to enhance residents’ competence and confidence in the perioperative management of neurosurgical and interventional neuroradiology patients, develop skills in advanced airway and haemodynamic management, and gain familiarity with the unique challenges of neurophysiological monitoring, positioning, and anaesthesia for prolonged procedures.
