Bariatric Anaesthesia SIA

North Bristol Trust (NBT)

We are a high functioning MDT delivering bariatric surgery to some of the most complex cases in the South West region. We accept referrals for BMI >60 with a mixed case load of 180 cases per year, operating twice a week on 3 session days. There are dedicated bariatric anaesthetists who will be able to show you the required skills of working within this field.

Choosing bariatrics as an SIA will give you a great overview of how a supportive MDT functions. You will have regular involvement with a small group of bariatric surgeons (Hewes, Hopkins, Osborne and Pournaras), our specialist nurse (Faye Taylor), along with opportunities to experience all the specialist care that tier 3 bariatrics patients receive including bariatric physicians, psychologists, dieticians, and pharmacists.

Operations include gastric balloons, one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB), Roux-en-Y bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and we are now performing endoscopic sleeve gastrectomy on a select patient group (BMI <45).

Recent SIA residents have had exposure to over 30 cases, building their confidence in all anaesthetic aspects of care and gaining the perioperative skillset of caring for patients with higher BMIs. This includes a greater understanding into ergonomics in theatre and the challenges of delivering perioperative care to this particular patient group.

Feedback from residents was that ‘This has been a great opportunity to extend my skills, see how a service is set up, and work with a really engaged MDT. I now feel much more confident in the care of bariatric patients both for specialist surgery and other surgery.’

During your time in bariatrics, there are a number of projects that you can get involved in, including:

-      Audits and QI

-      Resident teaching 11@11

-      Regional post fellowship study day - management and teaching

-      Conference attendance (e.g. SOBA)
