Regional SIA
At GWH ultrasound guidance is the standard of care for provision of regional anaesthesia. We cover a range of surgical specialties from general, breast and obstetrics to subspecialty upper and lower limb elective orthopaedics and trauma enabling awake/sedated patient experience for surgery.
As part of the SIA we would expect you to consolidate practice of Plan A blocks and gain an understanding of the anatomy/sonoanatomy and exposure to a range of more advanced procedures including
- Cervical plexus
- Additional approaches to the brachial plexus and peripheral elbow and forearm blocks
- Paravertebral blocks
- Obturator and LCNT block
- Proximal approaches to the sciatic nerve
- Ankle block
- Caudal epidural
- Catheter techniques for ESP, Femoral/FIB, Rectus sheath
- A range of peripheral nerve blocks for chronic pain conditions
Teaching
- On list with experienced consultants
- 4 half day (every 6 months) hands on small group sessions with dedicated model to scan
Residents will be encouraged to get involved in resident teaching, departmental teaching and QI projects. There will be opportunities for organising the post-primary regional study day and supporting juniors develop their regional technique. Involvement in research projects and those wishing to undertake Higher Education such as studying for EDRA would also be supported.
