Perioperative Medicine
This SIA post is ideal for an ST6–7 trainee seeking to develop a specialist interest in Perioperative Medicine within a supportive District General Hospital environment. The role offers close supervision and mentorship from senior clinicians with expertise in managing high-risk surgical patients.
Trainees will gain broad clinical exposure through participation in shared decision-making clinics, surgical multidisciplinary team meetings, cardiology clinics, and ortho-geriatric ward rounds. A particular strength of the post is the opportunity to follow patients throughout their perioperative journey—for example, observing their case being discussed in the gynae-oncology MDT, reviewing them in preoperative assessment, and later providing anaesthesia for their surgery. This continuity fosters a deeper understanding of holistic perioperative care and patient-centred decision-making.
In addition to clinical experience, there are numerous opportunities to lead and contribute to quality improvement projects, engage in leadership and management activities, and participate in teaching and research.
While a formal CPEX (cardiopulmonary exercise testing) clinic is not currently available on-site, a short secondment to a nearby hospital with an established service can be arranged to ensure trainees gain this experience as part of their SIA should they wish.
This post aims to provide a comprehensive grounding in perioperative medicine while supporting the development of a strong non-clinical portfolio, preparing trainees for consultant roles with a broad and balanced skill set.
