Regional Anaesthesia

At the RUH we have a significant number of consultant anaesthetists with a subspecialty interest in regional anaesthesia.

Residents undertaking the SIA in regional anaesthesia will do so over a minimum of 6 months and will have the opportunity to further develop regional expertise in a wide range of ultrasound guided techniques including awake upper and lower limb surgery.

The recent expansion of elective operating capacity at the newly opened Sulis Orthopaedic Centre (SOC) will provide excellent opportunities to develop expertise in specific blocks as well as to learn how to run operating lists safely and efficiently using regional techniques.

In addition to elective orthopaedics, there will also be plenty of opportunities to utilise regional anaesthetic techniques on the daily trauma lists and on the CEPOD list, particularly with regard to the management of fractured ribs through insertion of thoracic epidurals or erector spinae plane catheters.

There will be opportunities and an expectation to get involved in teaching as a faculty member for the annual departmental regional anaesthetic workshops and the more frequent block club and tea trolley teaching. QI projects, research projects and those wishing to undertake Higher Education such as studying for EDRA would also be supported.
